The wrestling world was abuzz when Apollo Crews, fresh off his WWE release, made a surprise appearance at TNA Slammiversary 2026. What's particularly intriguing is the timing of this move, as Crews was still in the midst of his 90-day non-compete period with WWE.
In a revealing interview with "Insight with Chris Van Vliet," Crews shed light on how this unique opportunity came about. It all started with a call from Moose, a fellow wrestler, who informed Crews that TNA was interested in bringing him on board for Slammiversary. Initially, Crews was hesitant, given the non-compete clause, but the idea of competing again piqued his interest.
"My first thought was, 'I'm still in my 90 days, this can't be possible.' But then, the idea of stepping back into the ring, even for a brief moment, became enticing," Crews explained.
What makes this story fascinating is the behind-the-scenes coordination between WWE and TNA. Crews' explanation provides a glimpse into the intricate dynamics of the wrestling industry, where even during a non-compete period, opportunities can arise.
"TNA reached out to WWE, and they facilitated the process. It's a testament to the respect between the companies and their willingness to work together for the benefit of the sport," Crews added.
The match itself, a triple threat against Mustafa Ali and Rich Swann for the TNA International Championship, was a strategic move. Crews didn't have to take the pin, ensuring Ali retained the title. This arrangement allowed Crews to showcase his skills without committing to a long-term TNA contract.
"It was a win-win situation. I got to compete again, and TNA got a big name for their event. Plus, I didn't have to lose, which was important to me after years of WWE losses," Crews reflected.
While Crews' post-WWE focus isn't solely on wrestling, this Slammiversary appearance served as a reminder of his talent and popularity. It's a testament to his enduring appeal that TNA was keen to have him, even for a brief stint.
"The spotlight was on me again, and it felt great. It's a reminder that I still have a lot to offer in this industry, even if my priorities have shifted," Crews concluded.
This story offers a unique insight into the world of professional wrestling, where opportunities can arise in unexpected ways, and the dynamics between companies can create fascinating narratives.
